Unit 1 The role of management
Part 1 What is management?
Read the article and choose the best answer for questions 1 – 5 below it.
Organizations of all kinds – business, governmental, educational, religious, service – are run by managers. Managers are the leaders who help organizations to achieve their purposes. The activities of managers are very important because they establish policies and goals for an organization, influence its productivity, influence a nation’s standard of living and quality of life. In other words, managers make decisions that affect both their organizations and the societies that they serve. As Peter Drucker, the well-known American business professor and consultant, noted, effective managers are a critical resource of both developed and developing countries.
What is management? Management is the process of utilizing an organization’s resources to achieve specific objectives through the functions of planning, organizing, leading and controlling. An organization’s resources traditionally are divided into four major categories: human, financial, physical, and technological. People or human resources are the most critical resource of all organizations. The human resources of a business organization may include a variety of specialists such as engineers, accountants, salespeople, secretaries, mechanics, computer and machine operators, through whom the firm’s managers achieve the firm’s objectives.
Financial resources include different financial assets such as share or stock capital, borrowed capital, short-term investments that can be converted to cash when needed, accounts receivable, accounts payable, etc. The success and efficiency of a company depends on the sufficient amount of its financial resources. The physical resources include land, buildings, furniture, different equipment, computers and machines.
Nowadays the primary strength of some companies, the basis for their survival, lies in the technology they possess. High-technology companies (e.g. Sony Corporation, Xerox Corporation) rely heavily on their ability to outperform competitors with superior products. Thus, technological resources are patents and processes that relate to both products and production methods.
In order to work effectively, managers have to possess three major skills: technical, human and conceptual. Technical skills involve the ability to use specialized expertise in practice. A manager’s effectiveness in one position may require the technical knowledge of a bookkeeper and in another the skills of a computer programmer. Human skills involve the ability to communicate with people and motivate them. Conceptual skills include the ability to use abstract thinking, to develop the concepts that help to shape the future image of a company, to formulate and implement strategic plans.
5
Managerial work can be divided into three managerial levels: top (or upper), middle, and first-level. The use of conceptual, human and technical skills varies with these levels of management. Conceptual skills are critical to the work of toplevel managers. Human skills are very important to middle-level managers. Technical skills have the greatest importance for first-level managers. However, human skills are valuable for managers at all levels.
